Free alternatives to Adobe After Effects

After Effects is subscription only, and when the plan lapses so does the application your project files need. The free field here is genuinely narrow, and that is worth saying plainly: After Effects composites, keys and animates, it is not an editor, so every list that pads itself out with Shotcut, Kdenlive and OpenShot is answering a different question. We stock exactly two free tools we would put in front of it, so this page is short.

DaVinci Resolve

Best Free Alternative ToAdobe After Effects

A node compositor that ships inside a free editor, color suite and audio post

Resolve's Fusion page is a node-based compositor, so keying, rotoscoping, tracking, particles and 3D text happen in the same free application that cuts and grades the footage around them. That is closer to what After Effects is for than any general-purpose editor gets, and there is no watermark, no time limit and no restriction on commercial work. Version 21.0.3 shipped on 22 July 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • Free plan, paid from $295 one-time (as of July 2026)
Best for:
Shot work that has to land back in an edit, done by one person on one machine
The catch:
Nodes are not layers, so the mental model differs from After Effects in the first minute, and Blackmagic's own edition document (dated August 2024) puts the Fusion camera tracker, the VR toolset, motion blur, spatial and temporal noise reduction and the scripting APIs in the paid Studio column.

Compared to Adobe After Effects

  • Advantage: Free, unwatermarked and usable commercially, where After Effects stops opening when the subscription lapses
  • Advantage: Compositing, editing, color and audio post are one application, so there is no round trip and no second subscription
  • Advantage: Runs on Linux, which After Effects does not
  • Tradeoff: A node graph instead of a layer stack, so very little of what you know about the After Effects timeline transfers
  • Tradeoff: The camera tracker, motion blur and noise reduction are Studio only per Blackmagic's August 2024 edition document
  • Tradeoff: Nothing here opens an After Effects project, and there is no equivalent of its plugin market
  • Worth knowing: Studio, if you ever need it, is a one-time $295 from Blackmagic or $299.99 on the Mac App Store rather than a subscription (as of July 2026)

A full 3D, animation and VFX suite under the GPL, with no tiers at all

Blender is where free motion graphics and 3D work actually live. Modeling, animation, rendering, simulation, compositing nodes and a 32-slot video sequencer arrive in one GPL download with no account, no watermark and no paid edition waiting for you. Version 5.2.0 LTS landed on 14 July 2026 with two years of LTS updates, for Windows (including ARM), macOS 13 or newer, and Linux.

Blender screenshot
  • Completely free (as of July 2026)
  • Netherlands
  • Open source (GNU GPL Version 2 or later for the source the Foundation develops, GNU GPL Version 3 or later for distributed binaries)
Best for:
Motion graphics, 3D titles and effects work where you would have reached for an After Effects plugin
The catch:
Blender is a 3D application first. Its interface, keymap and vocabulary are built for 3D work, the project ships a separate Video Editing workspace template precisely because the default one is wrong for editing, and nothing on blender.org points a 'I just need to finish this shot' user at a starting path.

Compared to Adobe After Effects

  • Advantage: Free under the GPL with no tiers, no account and no expiry, against a subscription that has to keep running
  • Advantage: 3D, simulation and rendering are built in, where After Effects reaches for plugins or a separate application
  • Advantage: Windows, macOS and Linux, and the Windows download is about 348 MB
  • Tradeoff: The learning curve is a 3D suite's, not a compositor's, so none of your After Effects habits help on day one
  • Tradeoff: No After Effects project import and no shared plugin ecosystem
  • Tradeoff: Its own manual frames the video sequencer as a way to edit inside a 3D suite rather than as a standalone editing tool
  • Worth knowing: Blender is the free answer for the 3D and motion graphics half of After Effects, while Resolve's Fusion page suits the keying and cleanup half better

How to choose

Ask what you were actually doing in After Effects. If it was keying, rotoscoping, tracking and shot cleanup that has to go back into an edit, DaVinci Resolve's Fusion page is the closest free thing there is, and the same free download also cuts and grades the footage. If it was motion graphics, titles and 3D-flavored animation, Blender has the deeper toolkit, at the price of learning a 3D application first. If neither describes your work and what you really needed was a timeline, read our Premiere Pro page instead, because a video editor is not an After Effects replacement however many roundups say otherwise.
