Our take

A capable, zero-cost form builder best for quick surveys inside the Google ecosystem, though design and advanced features stay basic.

The form builder you already have

Google Forms is Google's free web app for building surveys, quizzes, registrations, and simple data-collection forms. It ships with every personal Google account and Google Workspace plan, with no standalone subscription or per-response charges.

Classrooms, nonprofits and anyone with a Gmail address

  • Educators running quizzes, assignments, and classroom feedback
  • Teams and nonprofits that already use Google Workspace
  • Quick internal surveys, RSVP forms, and lightweight customer feedback
  • Anyone who needs unlimited responses at no cost

Nothing to price, because there is no paid tier

Google Forms is free for anyone with a Google account. There is no paid Google Forms tier. Workspace customers get Forms bundled with Gmail, Drive, and admin controls.

Five limits, and not one of them is a quota

  • Minimal design and branding compared with dedicated form builders
  • Basic logic and question types, not for complex enterprise surveys
  • No native payments in forms
  • File uploads require respondents to sign in with a Google account
  • Creating and managing forms requires a Google account

Good enough for most surveys, and free forever

For a classroom quiz, an RSVP, or an internal pulse check, Google Forms is the right answer and the cheapest one: unlimited responses, no upgrade prompt, and results that land in Sheets without any setup. It stops being the right answer when you need payments, real branding, or file uploads from people who do not have a Google account. Those are not caps you can pay to lift, because there is no Google Forms tier to buy. If you have hit one of them, the free Google Forms alternatives start where it stops.

Frequently asked questions about Google Forms

Does Google Forms cost anything once a form gets busy?

No. Unlimited forms and unlimited responses come with any Google account, with no per-response fee and no standalone paid tier to be pushed toward (as of July 2026). Google Workspace plans bundle Forms with admin controls and extra storage, but the form builder is the same one a free account gets.

Can Google Forms collect payments?

No. There are no native payments in Google Forms, and no tier to buy that adds them (as of July 2026). If money has to move through the form, forms.app and Tally both include payment fields on their free plans.

Do respondents need a Google account to answer?

Only if your form asks for a file. Ordinary questions can be answered by anyone with the link, but file uploads require the respondent to sign in with a Google account (as of July 2026). On a public form that quietly costs you everyone who is not already signed in.

How do I get the responses out?

They sync to Google Sheets automatically, with no setup and no export step, and from there they go anywhere a spreadsheet goes. You also get live charts inside Forms itself. This is the part of Google Forms that has aged best.

What does Google Forms do badly?

Design and depth. Your form looks like a Google Form and no upgrade changes that, the question types and logic are basic next to dedicated builders, and there are no payments or e-signatures (as of July 2026). For a classroom quiz or an RSVP none of that matters. For a lead-gen page it does.
