Two million events a month, and three chances to overshoot before the account goes
Amplitude gives away more free event volume than anything else in this category: 2 million events a month, forever, with no credit card (as of July 2026). If you have read that Amplitude's free plan is 50,000 monthly tracked users, that figure is out of date, and Amplitude's own FAQ explains why it now meters events instead.
The part worth reading twice is the overage policy. Exceed the monthly limit three times as a non-paying customer and Amplitude blocks the account. Keep exceeding it without upgrading and Amplitude deletes the account six months after that block. No other free plan on this site ends that way.
Below: what the allowance really covers, the instrumentation ceilings nobody mentions, and why you cannot cost the upgrade.

- Yes, within limits
65 out of 100, held up by volume and pulled down by policy
65 sits in our Usable band and just above Mixpanel at 63, which is the comparison most readers are making. Generosity at 82 is doing the lifting: twice Mixpanel's allowance, twice PostHog's, on the same meter, plus 10,000 session replays and real slices of the wider platform rather than analytics alone.
Freedom at 35 is doing the pulling, and it is the lowest freedom score in this category apart from Google Analytics. Two facts account for it. The overage policy ends in a deleted account, which no other free plan here does. And no tier above Free publishes a dollar figure anywhere, so you cannot cost your own upgrade path without a sales conversation. A larger free tier that is harder to leave on your own terms is exactly the shape these two pillars are meant to capture. Full reasoning on all four sits below.
65/100
Usable
Twice Mixpanel's free allowance, and the only free plan here that can end in a deleted account.
- Free plan generosity35% of the score
82/100
Two million events a month, forever, with no card asked for, which is twice what Mixpanel and PostHog give away on the same meter (as of July 2026). Alongside it: 10,000 session replays a month, 2,000 AI feedback records, one-time cohort syncs and limited access to Experiments, Guides and Surveys. What stops it scoring higher is a quieter ceiling that applies to every plan, free included, where a project stops indexing new values past 2,000 event types, 2,000 event properties or 1,000 user properties.
- Feature depth for the category25% of the score
70/100
Free covers basic product analytics plus real slices of the wider platform, session replay and limited experimentation among them, and nothing else free in this category except PostHog offers that combination. The holes are the ones a product team notices within a month: custom events and formulas, behavioural cohorts, alerts and heatmaps are all held back, and the 2-year retention window is a Plus feature rather than a free one.
- Freedom and honesty20% of the score
35/100
The behaviour at the ceiling is the harshest in this category. Exceed the monthly limit three times as a non-paying customer and Amplitude blocks the account, and if you keep exceeding it without upgrading, Amplitude deletes the account six months after that block (as of July 2026). Separately, no tier above Free publishes a dollar figure anywhere, so you cannot cost an upgrade without a conversation, and there is no self-hosted route out.
- What free users report20% of the score
60/100
G2 4.5 from 2,831 reviews and Capterra 4.6 from 60 (checked 27 July 2026), the G2 figure again from a search snippet rather than a loaded page. Both rate the whole product for a mostly paying base and neither tells us how the free tier behaves. Amplitude does beat Mixpanel on every Capterra sub-score, including Ease of Use at 4.1 against 3.9, though on roughly half the review base.
Scored July 2026. How we calculate the free plan score.
Three strikes, a silent indexing limit, and what free withholds
The 2 million event limit is the one on the page. The ones that catch people are underneath it (as of July 2026):
- Three overages, then a block. As a non-paying customer, exceeding the monthly limit three times blocks the account: no charts, no dashboards. Administrative functions like the User API keep running so compliance requests can still be served.
- Deletion at six months. If the overages continue without an upgrade, Amplitude deletes the account six months after the initial block. An abandoned free project that keeps ingesting is not harmless.
- 2,000 event types, 2,000 event properties, 1,000 user properties per project. This applies on every plan, not just Free, and past it Amplitude stops indexing new values. It happens quietly, which makes a sprawling taxonomy genuinely risky.
- 30 events per second per user or device, above which requests are throttled. Load tests and bulk imports meet this first.
- Hidden, backfilled and inactive events all count towards your 2 million. Identify and Group Identify calls, blocked IDs, deleted events and computed events do not.
- Free withholds custom events and formulas, behavioral cohorts, alerts and heatmaps, and the 2-year data retention window is a Plus feature.
Three things we could not verify first-party and therefore do not state: what the free plan's own retention window is, what happens to historical data if you downgrade, and whether any plan caps seats. Treat all three as open questions before you commit a team to this.
The ladder above free, and why you cannot cost it
Here is the honest situation: effectively nothing above Free carries a number. Plus says it starts at $0 and bills pay-as-you-go, but it requires a credit card at signup, scales to 70 million events and includes 2-year data retention. Growth and Enterprise both say "Custom" against "Event based pricing", with 20,000 and 50,000 monthly session replays respectively and unlimited projects plus role-based access control at the top (as of July 2026). The bill estimator runs in the browser, so there is no list rate on the page for anyone to read, including us.
That is a real difference from the tool most readers are comparing this against. Mixpanel's free plan sits under a published rate of $0.28 per 1,000 events and a stated 20 million event ceiling, which means you can model the cost of growth in a spreadsheet. With Amplitude you model it in a meeting.
What most people upgrade for is not extra volume. It is behavioral cohorts and alerts, both of which sit above Free, and then the 2-year retention window on Plus. If your analysis is going to run across quarters rather than weeks, that retention line is the one that decides it.
A note on the numbers you may find elsewhere. An October 2023 Amplitude press release quoted a Plus tier starting at $49 a month. The current pricing page says Plus starts at $0, so that figure is superseded and we are not carrying it forward.

Is Amplitude really free? Yes, if somebody is watching the meter
A real free plan with a ceiling you will meet. Fine until you grow into it.
Yes, within limits, and the limits are the largest on offer here. Two million events a month with no card is a serious amount of free product analytics, and unlike most free tiers in this category it gives you slices of the whole platform rather than the analytics module alone.
The condition is unusual enough to state as an instruction rather than a caveat: somebody has to own the account. This is the only free plan on this site whose published policy ends in deletion, so a project that gets instrumented, forgotten, and then keeps firing events past the cap can eventually be removed. Set the tracking down properly when you stop using it.
Who lives here comfortably: a growth or product team under 2 million events a month with a disciplined event taxonomy, especially one that would otherwise pay separately for analytics, experimentation and in-product guides. Who should not: any team that needs to plan a budget, because the price of the next tier is not published; anyone with a sprawling taxonomy heading for 2,000 event types; and anyone who wants a self-hosted exit, because there is not one.
If published pricing is what you want, PostHog's free plan prints every per-unit rate and simply stops ingesting at the cap. Free Amplitude alternatives ranks the options, and the best free analytics tools covers the category.
Frequently asked questions about Amplitude
Is Amplitude's free plan 50,000 MTUs or 2 million events?
Events. Amplitude's pricing page meters the free plan at 2 million events a month and its FAQ explains that one tracked user can generate many events, which is why the free plan measures event volume (as of July 2026). Amplitude's billing documentation still describes a 50,000 MTU free plan, and we follow the pricing page because it is newer.
How long does Amplitude keep free-plan data?
We could not verify a free-plan retention window first-party, so we are not quoting one. What Amplitude does publish is that 2-year data retention is a Plus feature rather than a free one (as of July 2026), which tells you the free window is shorter without telling you by how much. Confirm it with Amplitude before you plan any year-over-year analysis.
Does Amplitude's free plan include session replay?
Yes, 10,000 session replays a month (as of July 2026), which is the same figure Mixpanel gives free and double PostHog's 5,000 web replays. Heatmaps are a different story: those are withheld on the free plan entirely.
Do I need a credit card for Amplitude's free plan?
No. The Free tier states no credit card is required (as of July 2026). Plus is the one that asks for a card at signup, even though it is listed as starting at $0, so check which plan you are picking.
