Our take

AppFlowy is the most Notion-shaped open source option, and self-hosting removes every limit, but the hosted free tier stops at 2 members and the database features still trail Notion.

Notion's shape, on infrastructure you can own

You get a block-based editor with slash commands, databases with grid, board, and calendar views, an AI assistant, and apps for desktop, mobile, and the browser. The code is AGPL-3.0 on GitHub, and the whole backend can run on your own server.

The local-first architecture is the interesting part. Data lives on your device and syncs up, so the app keeps working on a plane or a bad hotel connection.

Four situations where AppFlowy is the right call

  • Small teams that want Notion's shape without Notion's per-seat bill
  • Organizations that need documents on their own infrastructure for compliance
  • Anyone who works offline often enough for Notion's connection dependence to hurt
  • Developers who want to read, fork, or extend the code

Two members free, fifty on Pro: the price is $10 a user

As of July 2026 the free cloud tier includes one collaborative workspace with up to 2 members, unlimited pages and blocks, 5 GB of storage, real-time collaboration, mobile apps, 10 AI responses, and 2 AI images. Pro is $10 per user per month when purchased yearly (listed as $12.50 per user per month billed annually) and lifts you to 50 workspace members, unlimited storage and AI responses, up to 100 free guest editors, and 50 AI images per month. Add-ons cover frontier AI models ($8 per user per month) and a local-processing Vault Workspace ($6 per user per month billed annually).

Self-hosting is free and has no member or storage caps.

Two members and 10 AI responses: the limits you meet first

  • Two members on the free cloud tier is tight. A team of four is already a paid plan or a self-host project
  • Database relations, rollups, and formulas are noticeably thinner than Notion's
  • The template and integration ecosystem barely exists next to Notion's
  • Self-hosting means Docker, Postgres, and object storage, which is a genuine barrier for non-technical teams
  • The AI allowance on free (10 responses) is a demo, not a working tool

Own it or outgrow it, our call on AppFlowy

AppFlowy is the best answer to "I want Notion but I want to own it", provided you can either live inside a 2-person workspace or run Docker. The gap in database depth is real and worth testing against your actual Notion setup before you commit. For plain documents and light trackers, most people will not notice what is missing.

Frequently asked questions about AppFlowy

Is AppFlowy free?

The hosted free plan gives you one collaborative workspace with up to 2 members, unlimited pages and blocks, 5 GB of storage, 10 AI responses, and 2 AI images (as of July 2026). Self-hosting the AGPL-3.0 code is free and has none of those caps, but you run the infrastructure.

How close is AppFlowy to Notion?

Close on the core: block editor, slash commands, and database views including grid, board, and calendar. It is behind on relations and rollups between databases, formula depth, template variety, and integrations. Day-to-day docs and simple trackers feel familiar; complex Notion setups do not port cleanly.

Does AppFlowy work offline?

Yes. AppFlowy is local-first, so data lives on your device and syncs when a connection returns. That is a real difference from Notion, which is effectively unusable offline.

What does self-hosting AppFlowy involve?

A Docker Compose stack including Postgres and object storage, which you deploy and keep updated yourself. If you are comfortable running Docker on a small VPS it takes an evening. If you are not, the 2-member free cloud tier is the realistic option.
