A CRM that is fast, plain, and yours to run
EspoCRM is the open source CRM for people who find SuiteCRM too heavy and Twenty too young. It has been around long enough to be stable and complete, and it stays light: the interface is fast and uncluttered, which is not a given among self-hosted CRMs. You get leads, contacts, accounts, opportunities, a workflow engine, and custom entities you can shape to your business.
Like the other open source tools here, its "free" is the self-hosted kind. Run it on your own PHP and MySQL hosting and it costs nothing but your server, with no per-seat fee and no record cap. The paid cloud exists for people who want the same product without the maintenance.
Who ends up happiest on a self-hosted EspoCRM
- Small businesses with some technical help who want a no-nonsense self-hosted CRM
- Teams that need custom entities and workflow automation without paying per seat
- Anyone who liked the idea of Twenty but wants a more established, battle-tested option
Free to install, and the cloud's real price is $45
As of July 2026, self-hosting EspoCRM is free under AGPL-3.0, including for commercial use, with unlimited users and records. You get the full feature set: contacts and accounts, sales pipeline, the workflow engine, email integration, reports, and custom fields and entities.
The cost is running it. EspoCRM needs a web server, PHP, and a MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL database, and you own the updates and backups. If you would rather not, the hosted cloud starts at $15 per user per month, but with a three-user minimum the real entry price is $45 a month, so the cloud is not the cheap route.
EspoCRM's three limits: the look, the upkeep, the list
The interface, while clean, is functional rather than designed. It does the job without delight, and next to Twenty it looks like the more utilitarian tool.
Self-hosting is a genuine commitment. It is easier to stand up than a heavier app, but it is still a server you are responsible for, and "free if you can run a LAMP stack" is the honest framing.
The native integration list is shorter than the hosted incumbents', so connecting EspoCRM to the rest of your stack can mean using its API rather than a ready-made app. Check your must-have connections before committing.
Our pick when you want to own it without the weight
EspoCRM is the balanced open source pick: more polished and modern than SuiteCRM, more proven than Twenty, and free forever if you can host it. For a small team with a little technical support that wants to own its CRM, it is an easy recommendation. If nobody can run a server, the hosted cloud's three-user minimum makes Zoho's free plan the better-value hosted option.
