Our take

Formbricks is the strongest open source option for in-product surveys: free to self-host without caps, though the free cloud tier stops at 250 responses per month.

In-app surveys, open source, hosted in Frankfurt

Formbricks is an open source survey platform focused on gathering feedback across the user journey: in-app widgets, website popovers, link surveys, and email surveys. The core is licensed AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted with Docker at no cost; a hosted cloud runs from Frankfurt, Germany.

Product teams who want feedback inside the product

  • Product teams running in-app micro-surveys (NPS, churn, feature feedback)
  • Privacy-conscious teams that want survey data on EU servers or their own
  • Developers comfortable running Docker who want zero response limits for free

Free at 250 responses, priced at $74 above that

Formbricks is freemium plus open source. The free Hobby cloud plan includes 250 responses per month in 1 workspace (as of July 2026). Pro ($74/mo) raises that to 2,000 responses with unlimited seats; Scale ($325/mo) adds roles and quotas. Self-hosting the Community Edition is free with no response caps.

The 250-response limit, and what Docker costs you

  • 250 responses per month on the free cloud tier is tight for public surveys
  • Self-hosting is free only if you can run and maintain Docker yourself
  • It is survey-first: no payments, e-signatures, or order-form features
  • Some enterprise modules in the repo sit under a separate commercial license

Self-host it, or budget $74 before you launch

Formbricks is the strongest open source answer for in-product feedback: NPS prompts, churn surveys and website popovers that fire at the right moment, all AGPL-3.0 and free to run on your own server with no response ceiling. That version is the recommendation. The hosted Hobby plan is a different proposition, because 250 responses a month runs out fast on a public survey and the next rung is $74/mo. Do not come here for payments, e-signatures or order forms, none of which Formbricks does. If you cannot run Docker and cannot spend $74, the free Formbricks alternatives will serve you better.

Frequently asked questions about Formbricks

Is Formbricks open source?

The core is, under AGPL-3.0, with the source at github.com/formbricks/formbricks and Docker instructions for running it yourself. The honest caveat is that some enterprise modules in the repository sit under a separate commercial license, so the codebase is not AGPL from end to end.

Can Formbricks run surveys inside my product?

That is what it is built for. In-app widgets and website popovers fire at a moment you choose, which is how NPS, churn and feature-feedback surveys actually get answered, and link and email surveys cover everything outside the product. The mobile SDKs are a Pro feature at $74 a month (as of July 2026).

Where is Formbricks Cloud hosted?

Frankfurt, Germany, which is usually why EU teams shortlist it. The company behind it is Formbricks GmbH in Kiel. If a specific jurisdiction is a requirement rather than a preference, self-hosting puts the data wherever your own server is.

Can Formbricks handle payments or order forms?

No. It is survey-first at every tier, so there are no payments, no e-signatures and no order-form features, free or paid (as of July 2026). If one tool has to collect feedback and take money, this is not it.

Changes that affect what you get for free: pricing, free plan limits, ownership, and whether the project is still maintained. Not every release.

  • ReleaseAffects the free plan

Formbricks 5 needs a self-hosting migration and two new services

The 27 May 2026 release makes Cube and the Formbricks Hub mandatory components and changes the data model, so every self-hosted instance has a migration to plan. Self-hosting is the free route here, and it just got heavier to run.

  • Security

A critical Formbricks bug let attackers reset other people's passwords

CVE-2025-59934, scored 9.4 of 10, came from JWT tokens being decoded but never verified. Anyone who knew a user id could forge a token and take over that account. Fixed in 4.0.1, so any self-hosted instance below that needs updating.
