The thing people upgrade for is not a feature they wanted, it is the second step in their Zap. That is an effective place to put a paywall and an expensive one to be on the wrong side of, because per-task billing means the cost of a useful automation grows faster than the headline price suggests. A five-step Zap running two hundred times a month is a thousand tasks, which is already past the Professional baseline. Price your real workflow, not the plan.

No, and our answer is taster. A free plan that forbids the second action is showing you how the builder works rather than letting you automate anything, and 100 tasks a month is a fortnight of a single busy Zap.

Someone can genuinely live on it, and the profile is narrow: one simple two-step automation firing a handful of times a day, run by someone who values Zapier's connector catalogue and setup polish above everything else. Nobody with a filter, a branch, a second action or a busy trigger can. Neither can anyone who needs a response faster than fifteen minutes, or anyone who wants their automations off a vendor's infrastructure, because self-hosting does not exist here at any price.
