Canva free is unlimited designs minus the four tools people search for

The Canva features people go looking for by name are the ones that are not free. The background remover, Magic Switch resizing, the premium template and stock library, and more than one Brand Kit all sit on Pro (as of July 2026).

What free does give you is real, and it is not volume-limited: unlimited designs, 5GB of storage, one Brand Kit capped at 3 colors, a large free template and stock library, and a small monthly AI allowance. Nobody runs out of designs on Canva. They run into a feature. This page covers which one you meet first, what Pro costs where you live, and the part of the deal that gets discussed least, which is what happens to your work if you leave.

58 out of 100, held down by what you cannot export

58 puts Canva in our Usable band, which we define as fine for light or personal use with growth pushing you onto a paid plan. It is a mid-table score in a category where six tools score 73 or above, and the pillar doing the damage is not the one you would expect.

Generosity actually scores 72, because unlimited designs and 5GB is a genuinely open free tier by volume. Feature depth drops to 55, because the specific things people arrive wanting are Pro. Freedom is the low one at 38, and it is the honest heart of this page: your designs live in Canva's format with no editable export into another design tool, so leaving means rebuilding rather than migrating.

Sentiment sits at 58 on two consistent numbers, G2 4.7 and Capterra 4.7 (checked 24 July 2026). They agree with each other, which counts for something, and they rate Canva overall from a reviewer base heavy with Pro and Teams customers, which is why we did not score it higher.

Unlimited designs free, with the features people came for sitting behind Pro.

Free plan generosity35% of the score

72/100

Unlimited designs with no cap on how many you make, 5GB of storage, a large free template and stock library, one Brand Kit limited to 3 colors and a small monthly AI allowance (as of July 2026). Volume is not the limit here, so most people never run out of room. Pro lists at $144 per year in the US.

The free tier does the template-to-export job well, and for a lot of social and presentation work it is enough. But the specific features people go looking for Canva alternatives over are all Pro: the background remover, Magic Switch resizing and the premium asset library. Photopea gives away background removal and full layered editing free, so within this category Canva charges for the thing people arrive wanting.

Freedom and honesty20% of the score

38/100

This is where Canva costs you most. Your designs live in Canva's format with no editable export into another design tool, so leaving means rebuilding. Premium stock sits mixed into ordinary search results, which makes it easy to finish a design you then cannot export without paying. No card is needed to sign up, and prices vary by region with frequent first-year promotions, so the checkout figure often differs from the list price.

G2 4.7 and Capterra 4.7 (checked 24 July 2026) agree with each other, which is worth something, but both rate Canva overall and a large share of reviewers are Pro or Teams customers. We hold no free-tier reports, so this stays a little above the middle on the consistency of the two numbers rather than on free-user evidence.

Scored July 2026. How we calculate the free plan score.

Free-plan limits that show up mid-design, not at the end of the month

Canva does not meter you, which makes its limits harder to see coming. They appear while you are working (as of July 2026):

  • The background remover is Pro. This is the single most searched-for Canva feature and it is not on free.
  • Magic Switch resizing is Pro, so reformatting one design into six social sizes is a paid action.
  • Premium templates and premium stock are Pro, and they sit mixed into ordinary search results rather than in a separate section.
  • One Brand Kit, limited to 3 colors. Pro gives you 5 Brand Kits.
  • 5GB of storage, against 100GB on Pro. Volume is rarely what stops people here.

That third point is worth sitting with. Because premium assets appear alongside free ones as you browse, it is easy to build a finished design and only discover at export that part of it is paid. That is not a bug, it is how the free tier converts, and knowing it in advance is most of the defence.

The limitation with the longest tail is not on the plan card at all. There is no way to export an editable file out of Canva into another design tool, so a year of brand work is a year of work that only opens in Canva. If you are choosing a tool to standardise on rather than a tool for one poster, weigh that above the price.

$144 a year in the US, and a checkout price that may not match it

Pro lists at $144 per year, or $18 on month-to-month billing, and there is nothing between it and free. What it buys is the feature list above plus 100GB of storage and content scheduling. As a proportionate step it is fine: one price, everything unlocked, no per-feature add-ons.

Two caveats on the numbers themselves. They are US list prices, and Canva prices by region, so the figure you see may be materially different. It also runs frequent first-year promotions, which means the checkout price often differs from the list price in your favour on the first year and not on the second. We date our figures for exactly this reason, and this one is July 2026.

The single feature most people upgrade for is the background remover, which is a striking thing to charge for in this category. Photopea's free plan does layered photo editing including background removal in a browser tab at no cost, funded by ads, which is the closest free answer to the reason most Canva upgrades happen.

Is Canva really free? Yes for templates, no for the tools people came for

Yes, within limits

A real free plan with a ceiling you will meet. Fine until you grow into it.

Yes, within limits, and the limits are features rather than counters. You can make unlimited designs forever without paying, which is a genuine free plan, and you will meet the Pro wall the first time you need to cut a subject out of a photo.

Who can live on free indefinitely: someone making social posts and presentations from templates, a club or a school making flyers, a small business whose visual needs are a monthly Instagram post. Who cannot: anyone editing photographs, anyone reformatting one design across six channels every week, and any team that needs more than three brand colors in a Brand Kit.

There is a second question worth asking even if free covers you today. If Canva is going to hold years of your work, understand that there is no editable way out. For layered photo work without that trade, see Photopea's free plan; for vector and logo work, Inkscape's free plan has no paid tier at all. Free Canva alternatives ranks the swaps, and best free design and whiteboarding tools covers the category.

Frequently asked questions about Canva

Is the Canva background remover free?

No. Background removal is a Canva Pro feature (as of July 2026), alongside Magic Switch resizing and the premium asset library. Photopea offers layered photo editing including background removal free in the browser, with ads and a limit of roughly one AI action per day.

How many designs can I make on Canva's free plan?

There is no cap on the number of designs (as of July 2026). Storage is capped at 5GB and one Brand Kit limited to 3 colors, but the design count itself is unlimited on free, so volume is almost never what pushes people to Pro.

Can I move my Canva designs into another design tool?

Not as editable files. Canva exports flat formats, and there is no editable export into another design tool, so switching later means rebuilding rather than importing. This is the part of the free plan worth weighing hardest if you expect to standardise on one tool for years.
