CapCut gives away 4K and charges you in watermarks

58 puts CapCut eighth of the thirteen tools we score here, four places below where we rank it, and below every open source editor in the category. We would rather state that gap than smooth it. The rank reflects how many people already have CapCut open and how fast it gets a finished video out of them; the score asks what the word free is attached to, and here that is a very different question.

Nothing about the editing earned this number. The terms you agree to and a price list nobody outside the app can read did. The other soft spot is that we hold no user rating for CapCut anywhere, no Capterra profile and nothing publishable from the other venues, which for the most widely used editor on this list is a real gap rather than something to shrug at. On what you actually get for nothing, CapCut scores like a solid free tier, and that half of the story is the half most roundups get wrong in the other direction.

CapCut's free tier is generous on the timeline and gated on assets, and that shape explains nearly every limit worth knowing (as of July 2026).

• Templates and premium assets stamp a watermark. Editing manually with your own clips, music, text and effects exports without one, per CapCut's own help centre. Templates, certain advanced effects and premium stock elements do not.
• There is an end card you have to delete. CapCut appends a short ending clip carrying its logo, and you scroll to it on the timeline and remove it yourself. It is easy to miss when you are in a hurry.
• 4K is available, not guaranteed. The same export page that lists 4K on web, desktop and mobile also says free accounts may face watermarks or bitrate limits on 4K exports while Pro subscribers get unrestricted 4K. If a clean 4K master is the deliverable, test one before you promise it.
• Sign-in is required for the AI features and anything cloud-backed. We could not confirm whether a purely local mobile edit exports without an account at all, so treat that as unverified rather than as a yes.
• Availability is a limit too. CapCut's terms say the services may not be available in all jurisdictions, some Pro and AI features are geo-blocked with an in-product message, and on desktop CapCut says those features are simply disabled with no error shown at all. CapCut publishes no country list, so neither do we.
• No Linux build, and the iPad version is described by CapCut itself as a beta offering selected features as a limited-time free trial, which may later become part of paid plans.

One more thing to weigh, which limits where you would use CapCut rather than what it does. Its Trust Center says the content you create belongs to you. Its live terms, last updated 15 April 2026, say that submitting user content grants the company and its affiliates a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, perpetual and worldwide licence to use it, extending to your username, image and likeness. Both are true at once. When this circulated in 2025, CapCut responded that the June 2025 update did not change the user content section, and it did not: the version dated 5 March 2024 already said perpetual and irrevocable.

You cannot forecast a CapCut budget from anything CapCut publishes. capcut.com/pricing returns a 404, and CapCut's own help article says the price varies by region, device and promotion and that you have to sign in and click Upgrade to see a figure, or open the desktop app, or look in the mobile app's Me section. We are not filling that gap with a number from a roundup, so no Pro or Standard price appears anywhere on this page.

Two things about the rungs are still worth carrying. Standard is a paid budget tier introduced in the March 2026 repackaging and is not the free plan, whatever its name suggests to a skim reader. And that same repackaging raised Pro's AI points from 550 to 1200 and its cloud storage from 100 GB to 1 TB while stating that previous pricing is no longer available to new subscribers, still without printing a figure. The only number CapCut prints anywhere on its own site is for Teams, in its own hedged wording: typical starting prices range from $15-$30 per seat per month when billed annually, and Teams can only be bought and managed in CapCut Online rather than in the apps.

What people upgrade for is not the editor, which you already have. It is unrestricted 4K, unlimited premium templates with commercial-use assets, brand libraries and the advanced AI tools. A 7-day Pro trial is promoted, and for most people that trial is how they find out what any of it costs.

Free with limits, and the limits are unusually easy to steer around once somebody tells you where they are. Edit manually and CapCut free is a better deal than its reputation: no watermark, 4K available rather than paywalled, and the fastest route from footage to a finished vertical video that exists.

Who genuinely pays nothing: someone making short-form video for their own channels from their own clips, their own music and CapCut's free effects, delivering at 1080p or testing a 4K export before committing to it. Phone-first editors especially, since the mobile app is the real product rather than a companion to a desktop one.

Who should not be here at all: agencies and in-house teams handling client footage, because of the perpetual, sub-licensable content licence in the terms dated 15 April 2026, which is a question for whoever signs your contracts rather than for us. Anyone who needs templates in a deliverable, since templates are exactly where the watermark lands. Anyone on Linux, who has no build. And anyone who needs to know what an upgrade costs before starting, because that number does not exist outside the app.
