Figma carries no rank on our design category list, which is deliberate: we rank the free-first tools and list the paid incumbents alongside them, because a page about free alternatives should not be led by the thing people are leaving. That is an editorial decision, not a judgement on the software. Figma is the best UI design tool in this category and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

The free Starter plan is capped in five places (as of July 2026):

• 3 Figma Design files, a cap now shared with Figma Sites files, so a Sites file spends design-file budget.
• 3 pages per file. This binds sooner than people expect, because a single product feature often wants a page for flows, a page for components and a page for handoff.
• 1 project. No separate spaces for separate clients.
• 3 FigJam files and 3 Slides files, counted separately from design files.
• No Dev Mode, so developer handoff is a paid capability.

Unlimited drafts is the pressure valve, and it is real: drafts do not count against the three files. It is also a workaround rather than a feature, because drafts get awkward the moment collaborators are involved and they are not where a shared team library belongs. Treating drafts as your filing system works for one person and stops working the day a second one arrives.

Here is what we have not verified, stated rather than guessed. We do not hold a record of what happens to file access if you exceed the cap or stop paying after a period on a paid plan. Treat that as unknown rather than assuming it is safe, and export what you cannot afford to lose before you cancel anything. Version history is 30 days on Starter, which is more than Penpot's free 7, so at least the recent past is covered.

The first paid step is Professional, and Figma prices it by what a person does rather than by one flat seat. A Full seat is $16 per month billed annually, a Dev seat is $12, and a Collab seat is $3. That structure is genuinely better than a single price for organisations where most people comment rather than design, and it is more arithmetic than a small team wants to do.

Above that, Organization is $55 per Full seat per month and Enterprise $90, both billed annually. Those are procurement tiers, and the jump from $16 to $55 is the steepest step in this ladder by a distance.

What people actually upgrade for is the file count. Nobody hits a feature wall inside Starter except Dev Mode; they hit the third file. That makes the upgrade decision a storage decision dressed as a software decision, and it is precisely the situation where an alternative with no file cap gets a serious look.

Figma has been an independent public company since its July 2025 IPO (NYSE: FIG), and Adobe's attempted acquisition was abandoned in December 2023, so nothing here is priced by Adobe.

Yes, within limits, and we are placing it one step above where a score of 54 would normally land. The reason for the departure: inside the three files nothing is stripped out except Dev Mode, so a solo designer with one project genuinely works on Starter indefinitely rather than being shown a demo. The score is dragged down by generosity at 35, which is a fair reading of the cap and not a reading of the product.

Who can live here: a solo designer with one small project, a student, someone maintaining a single product's UI with disciplined file hygiene, anyone who mainly needs to view and comment on work others own. Who cannot: freelancers juggling multiple clients, because one project and three files does not survive a second client, any team that needs Dev Mode for handoff, and anyone who needs a fourth file, which is most people within a few months.
