Tally's free plan is the product, and Pro is the team plan

Tally publishes what fair use means, which almost nobody in this category does: roughly 50,000 submissions and 50,000 email notifications a month, with 100 GB of uploads a month or 500 GB stored (as of July 2026). Forms, submissions, questions and its 45+ languages are otherwise uncapped.

Which means the useful question about Tally is not when it stops. It is what you notice missing after a month of daily use. There are three answers, and one of them cannot be bought at any price.

How Tally scores, and the one pillar it gives up ground on

Tally sits in our Strong band, level with forms.app, which holds the rank 1 badge on our form builder category page. Neither number was adjusted to make the other look right. Rank weighs the whole product, and this score asks only how far zero dollars gets you, so a plan with no volume ceiling holds its own against one capped at 5 forms.

The reverse is worth saying just as plainly. forms.app wins feature depth, because it gives away every field type it sells. Tally gives up real ground there, and the gap is in analytics rather than in form building.

Two things keep Tally out of our Outstanding band. The free plan is one seat, which no amount of volume makes up for if you work with other people. And we hold very little about how free users specifically find it: G2 4.8 against Trustpilot 3.8 (checked 24 July 2026), a split our data does not explain.

Free plan generosity35% of the score

90/100

Unlimited forms and unlimited submissions, with the fair-use ceiling published rather than hinted at: roughly 50,000 submissions and 50,000 email notifications a month, plus 100 GB of uploads (as of July 2026). Most people will never see that ceiling. The cost is that all of it belongs to one account, because team members are a $24 a month Pro feature.

Feature depth for the category25% of the score

80/100

Conditional logic, calculations, answer piping, Stripe payments, e-signatures and 45+ languages are all free, which covers most of what people actually build. Analytics is where it thins out: free visit analytics cover only the past 7 days and drop-off insights are Pro. Answer insights, the charts of what people replied, are free and unlimited.

Freedom and honesty20% of the score

70/100

Tally publishes its fair-use numbers instead of reserving a vague right to cut you off, and nothing is disabled when you get busy. The strings: the Tally badge stays until $24 a month, uploads are capped at 10 MB per file, there is no self-hosted option, and no plan at any price lets you upload a background image.

What free users report20% of the score

64/100

The scores we hold are G2 4.8 and Trustpilot 3.8 (checked 24 July 2026), and our data does not explain the gap between them. We have nothing on file about the free tier specifically, so this sits just above the middle on the strength of the G2 figure rather than on free-user evidence.

Scored July 2026. How we calculate the free plan score.

One seat, seven days of visit data, and one limit money cannot lift

Tally's limits are not about how much you collect. They are about who can work with you, and how much you can see afterwards.

  • The free plan is one person. Team members are a Pro feature at $24 a month, so there is no free collaboration at all, not even a second editor on one form.
  • Free visit analytics cover the past 7 days only. Extended history and drop-off insights are Pro. Answer insights, the charts of what people actually replied, are free and unlimited, which is the more useful half of the two.
  • No plan at any price lets you upload a background image. Free gives you a background color and a cover image. A real custom background needs injected CSS, and custom CSS is Pro. That is a design ceiling rather than a pricing one, and it surprises people who assumed money would solve it.
  • Uploaded files are capped at 10 MB each until you pay.
  • The Tally badge stays until $24 a month, along with custom domains.
  • Cloud only. There is no self-hosted option, though data is hosted in Europe.

The fair-use ceiling belongs in a different column from all of that. Roughly 50,000 submissions a month, published as a number rather than as a clause reserving the right to cut you off (as of July 2026), and nothing is switched off when a form does well. Most people will never approach it.

Free to $24, and the $24 is for people, not for volume

Tally's ladder is short and the first rung carries a lot. Pro bundles the three things free users most often want (branding removal, a custom domain, and a second person in the workspace) with the analytics half that free withholds: partial submissions, drop-off analytics and visit history beyond 7 days. Custom CSS is in there too, which is the only route to a real custom background.

Bundling that way makes the jump feel steep when you want one item from it. Adding a single teammate costs the same $24 a month as white-labeling an agency's entire client set, and there is no middle rung between free and Pro. The honest way to read the price is as a team plan that also removes branding, and if you are one person the question becomes whether the badge alone bothers you enough.

Business at $74 a month is a retention and compliance tier (data retention control, email verification, 90-day version history) rather than a bigger version of Pro, and most readers of this page will not need it. Both figures are annual; monthly billing is $29 and $89. Against the category the ladder is fair: Fillout's first paid step is $15 and buys nothing but a doubled response counter.

Is Tally really free? Yes, for exactly one of you

Yes, genuinely free

You can do the job this tool exists for, indefinitely, without paying.

Yes, and we are answering yes even though the score sits in the band where we usually say "within limits", because nothing in Tally counts down toward a wall. The one ceiling that exists is a published fair-use line at roughly 50,000 submissions a month, and the real constraint is who is allowed into the account rather than how much work the account can do.

A freelancer, a solo founder, a creator running lead-gen forms, a small shop taking Stripe payments through a checkout form: all of them can work here indefinitely without paying, with conditional logic, calculations, answer piping, e-signatures and 45+ languages included. The Tally badge on your forms is the price, and 7 days of visit history is the thing you will miss first.

Two people cannot. Team members start at Pro, so a two-person team is a paying team on day one, with no free second seat of any kind. If that is your situation, Fillout's free plan offers unlimited seats and meters responses at 1,000 a month instead, which is the exact opposite trade. Free Tally alternatives covers the rest of the field, and our best free form builders ranks it.

Frequently asked questions about Tally

Does Tally's free plan really have unlimited submissions?

Effectively yes, within published fair use. Tally names that as roughly 50,000 submissions and 50,000 email notifications a month, with 100 GB of uploads a month or 500 GB stored (as of July 2026). Nothing is disabled when a form gets busy, which is unusual in this category.

Can I add a team member on Tally's free plan?

No. The free plan is single-user and team collaboration starts on Pro at $24 a month billed annually, or $29 monthly (as of July 2026). There is no free second seat, so a two-person team pays from the start.

How much analytics do you get on Tally for free?

Visit analytics on the free plan cover only the past 7 days, and drop-off insights are a Pro feature (as of July 2026). Answer insights, the charts showing what people actually replied, are free and unlimited. So you can analyze your responses forever, but not your traffic.

Can I upload a custom background image in Tally?

No plan allows a background image upload, including the paid ones (as of July 2026). Free users can set a background color and a cover image, and a genuinely custom background needs injected CSS, which requires Pro. This is one of the few limits that paying does not fully remove.
