Lunacy is a native design app from Icons8 that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It covers UI design with auto layout, components, and prototyping, opens Sketch files, and ships with built-in libraries of icons, photos, and illustrations from the Icons8 catalog. Unlike browser-first tools, it has a real offline mode, and local documents are unlimited.

Lunacy is freemium. As of July 2026, the free plan includes unlimited local documents, 10 cloud documents, 30 days of version history, and the built-in asset libraries in low-resolution raster form with a linked attribution to Icons8 required. Pro costs $11.99 per user per month billed yearly and unlocks editable vector assets, studio-quality photos, the AI background remover and upscaler, unlimited cloud documents, and drops the attribution requirement. Icons8's documentation also lists a 3-member cap on free teams and a $4.99 per month Cloud plan that lifts the cloud document and version history limits without the Pro asset library.
Attribution baked in, and three more freeware limits
- Closed source freeware: if Icons8 changes terms, there is no community fork to fall back on, unlike Penpot or Inkscape
- Free-tier assets are low-resolution and require attribution, which quietly markets the Pro plan inside your own designs
- Cloud collaboration is capped at 10 documents on the free plan
- A smaller community than Figma or Penpot means fewer tutorials and shared resources

As a free native design app, Lunacy has no direct equal, and the offline mode is a real advantage. We rank it below Penpot because the freeware model gives you no ownership guarantee, and the asset upsell is woven through the experience.
