That last line is the one to read twice. Lunacy's selling point is that icons, photos and illustrations sit inside the canvas rather than in a separate stock site. On free, those assets arrive at low resolution and carry an attribution requirement, which means the free tier quietly markets Icons8 through your own designs. For a personal project that is a fair exchange. For client work with a brand guideline, it is a conversation you do not want to have.

The structural limitation is the licence. Lunacy is closed source freeware, and freeware is not the same promise as open source: it is free because Icons8 currently chooses that, and there is no fork waiting if that choice changes. Penpot and Inkscape both remove that risk, and neither has a native offline app, which is the trade this whole page turns on.

Note the shape of that: you are buying your own designs out of a credit line.

There is also a $9.99 a month Icons8 graphics subscription sold inside Lunacy for unlimited asset downloads without attribution, which overlaps with Pro and exists because the assets are Icons8's actual business.

Most people upgrade for the attribution removal rather than for any design feature, which tells you where the free plan is really pinching.

Yes, within limits, and the limit that matters is not a number. Unlimited local documents on a native offline app is a genuinely free design tool you can work in for years. The condition is that the built-in assets, which are the reason many people choose Lunacy, come at low resolution with an attribution to Icons8 attached.

Who can live on it: a designer on Windows or Linux who wants a real desktop app, anyone who needs to open .sketch files without owning a Mac, someone working offline on flights or bad connections, a solo designer whose assets come from elsewhere anyway. Who cannot: a team of four or more, anyone who needs more than 10 shared cloud documents, and anyone producing client work where a linked credit to Icons8 is not acceptable.
