Our take

Focalboard is free and capable for simple self-hosted boards, but the project is community-maintained without active feature development, which matters for anything long-term.

Mattermost's board tool, now on its own

Focalboard is an open source board tool in the Trello and Notion-database mold: boards with cards, custom properties, filters, and table or calendar views. It began at Mattermost as a companion to their chat platform and is available as a personal desktop app or a self-hosted server.

Personal boards, and Mattermost users already in Boards

  • Individuals who want a private, offline-capable board on their own machine
  • Mattermost users who already run the Boards plugin
  • Simple team boards where a frozen feature set is acceptable

Zero price, and the licenses behind it

Focalboard is open source and free. Compiled builds ship under an MIT license; the source is available under AGPL-3.0 (with parts under Apache-2.0). There is no hosted service and nothing to pay; you run the desktop app or host the server yourself.

No maintainer since 2024 is the limit that matters

  • Mattermost moved Focalboard to community ownership in August 2024 and, as of July 2026, the standalone project has no active maintainer and no feature roadmap
  • Releases and security fixes arrive slowly, if at all; evaluate that risk before storing team data in it
  • No automations, timeline view, or native integrations to speak of
  • The mobile experience is limited

Half a recommendation, and why we stop there

We can only half-recommend Focalboard: it works, it is genuinely free, and it may suit a personal board. For a team tool you expect to still improve next year, choose Plane or Vikunja, which are actively developed.

Focalboard plans and pricing

Completely free: run the personal desktop app or self-host the server, with no user limits and no paid tiers

There is no hosted service and nothing to buy. The standalone project has been community-owned since 2024 with no active maintainer, so expect no new features and slow fixes.

Frequently asked questions about Focalboard

Can you still download Focalboard?

Yes, from github.com/mattermost-community/focalboard, but the last release is from June 2024 and the standalone project has no active maintainer (as of July 2026). What you download today is what the tool will be, since there is no roadmap and security fixes arrive slowly or not at all.

Does Focalboard work offline on your own computer?

Yes. There is a personal desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that keeps your boards on your own machine with no account to create (as of July 2026). The alternative is running the server yourself, which brings the usual backup and uptime work.

Is there a hosted Focalboard you can sign up for?

No. There is no hosted service, no paid tier and nothing to buy, so the only ways in are the desktop app and self-hosting (as of July 2026). That also means there is no support to purchase: if something breaks, your options are the community or the source code.

Is Focalboard the same thing as Mattermost Boards?

They share an origin. Focalboard began at Mattermost as a companion to their chat platform, and Mattermost users who already run the Boards plugin are getting the same lineage. The standalone project is the part that moved to community ownership in August 2024, and it is the one we review here.

What is missing from Focalboard compared with Trello?

Automations, timeline views, native integrations of any consequence, and a mobile experience worth relying on (as of July 2026). You get boards with cards, custom properties, filters, and table or calendar views, and with no active maintainer that list is now permanent. For team data you expect to keep past this year we would pick Plane or Vikunja instead.
