Miro free gives everybody a seat and only three boards to sit around

47 puts Miro in our Limited band. Among design and whiteboarding tools with a free plan, nothing scores lower. Only Adobe Illustrator sits below it, and Illustrator has no free tier to score at all.

Generosity at 28 is doing most of that. Three editable boards is a ceiling that arrives within the first week of real use, and the free whiteboards in this category (Excalidraw, tldraw, draw.io) do not count boards at all. Feature depth at 68 is the counterweight: inside those three boards you get the full canvas and the template library, and for workshop facilitation Miro is ahead of every free tool here.

Miro carries no rank on our design category list, and that is our editorial choice rather than a verdict on the product. We rank the free-first tools and list the paid incumbents beside them.

Sentiment at 55 rests on G2 4.6 and Capterra 4.7 (checked 24 July 2026), consistent with each other and drawn from teams and enterprises on paid plans. We hold nothing from anyone living inside the three-board limit.

The free plan's caps are short to list and the unknowns beside them matter as much (as of July 2026):

• 3 editable boards. The binding limit, and the reason most people are reading this page.
• 10 AI credits per month, against 25 per member per month on Starter.
• Private boards are a Starter feature, so on free, privacy is part of what you are not getting.

Unlimited team members is the real generosity here and it does not solve the board problem. Twelve people can edit, and they are all editing the same three boards, so a team that runs a weekly retro is choosing between keeping history and having somewhere to work by about week four.

Two things we have not verified, stated plainly rather than guessed at. We do not know whether boards past the third become read-only, get archived, or are simply blocked from creation, so treat the behaviour at the ceiling as unknown. We also have not verified which facilitation features (voting, timers, breakout frames) are on the free plan versus paid, which is why our feature-depth judgement rests on the canvas and template library we can confirm rather than on the whole product. Starter is $8 per member per month billed yearly, and what it buys is the thing you ran out of: unlimited boards, plus private boards and 25 AI credits per member per month. That is a proportionate first step in isolation, and it changes character with headcount, because it is per member and the free plan trained you to invite everyone.

Do that arithmetic before you upgrade. A twelve-person team that was free yesterday is $96 a month on Starter, and the free plan's best feature (unlimited members) is what makes the first paid step expensive. Business at $20 per member per month adds AI workflows, interactive prototypes and two-way integrations, and Enterprise is custom-priced from 30 members.

One billing note: monthly billing costs about 20 percent more than yearly, so the $8 figure assumes a twelve-month commitment.

The feature people upgrade for is board count, without exception. Nobody pays Miro for AI credits. They pay because the fourth workshop needs somewhere to happen.

No, and our answer is taster. Three editable boards is a demonstration of a workshop platform rather than a way to run one, and our own notes put the ceiling inside the first week of real use.

Who can genuinely stay: one person keeping a single long-lived planning board, or a team evaluating Miro properly before buying, where unlimited members means everyone can join the trial without a seat conversation. That second case is a real strength and it is still an evaluation. Who cannot: any team running recurring workshops or retros, because each one wants its own board, and anyone who needs a board to be private, which starts on Starter.
